WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Cheri Bustos released the following statement after Congressman Paul Ryan, the Chairman of the House Budget Committee, released his latest budget proposal:
“Today’s misguided proposal from Paul Ryan once again attempts to balance the budget on the backs of hardworking Illinois middle class families, seniors and students. It raises the cost of prescription drugs for seniors, puts the opportunity for a college education further out of reach for many Americans and ends the Medicare guarantee.
“America’s success depends on a strong middle class- a class devastated by recession and still in desperate need of leadership with the right priorities in Washington. We must protect Medicare and Social Security and the seniors and middle class families in Illinois who rely on them and continue to make investments in the future of our nation. From infrastructure to education, we have to make smart choices to maintain our competitive edge.
“Democrats and Republicans need to work together to get our country on a path toward a balanced budget and that is why the first bill I introduced was the Government Waste Reduction Act. My bipartisan, common sense bill would reduce the deficit in a balanced way by cutting down on duplicative services and rooting out waste in government, while preserving crucial services and programs.
“I’ll continue to fight for common sense solutions that prioritize the middle class while opposing plans that only look out for special interests.”
