WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17) released the following statement following President Obama’s address to the American people on the situation in Syria:
“I’m encouraged that President Obama tonight signaled his willingness to continue diplomatic efforts to disarm Syria of its chemical weapons. I have said from the beginning that force should be a last resort and that it is important that we work with the international community in responding to the recent brutal attacks on defenseless Syrian civilians.
“What happened in Syria is an unthinkable and horrible reality, and while I strongly believe that we must not tolerate the use of chemical weapons, many questions still remain before we can determine what further response is most appropriate. As this critical debate continues, I maintain my commitment to listening to the people of our region and to receiving the most up-to-date intelligence on the situation in Syria.”
