Congresswoman Cheri Bustos “Extremely Disappointed” In Continued Politicization Of Farm Bill, Calls For Speaker Boehner To Appoint Conferees Before August Recess

Today Bustos Called On Speaker Boehner To Move Bipartisan, Five-Year Farm Bill Forward By Agreeing To Conference Committee With Senate Before August Recess

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17), a member of the House Agriculture Committee, issued the following statement after reports of a House Republican agreement on a nutrition bill that would cut $40 billion from nutrition funding for families and children.  Bustos also joined today with other lawmakers in calling on Speaker Boehner to move a bipartisan, five-year Farm Bill forward by agreeing to a conference committee with the Senate before the start of the August recess.  Bustos’ letter to Speaker Boehner can be found HERE.

“I’m extremely disappointed by the continued politicization of the Farm Bill by Republican leadership in the House.  The farmers I meet with back home in Illinois are sick and tired of the games being played by Washington politicians and are thirsting for the certainty and predictability of a bipartisan, five-year Farm Bill.  Unfortunately, today’s plan proposed by House Republicans will only make Farm Bill passage that much harder.  I’ll repeat what I have said all along- both sides need to put the country first and come together to move this process forward.  Speaker Boehner can start that process immediately by agreeing to go to a conference committee with the Senate before Congress leaves for August.”
