WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17) – a member of both the House Agriculture and Appropriations Committees – released the following statement after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a proposed rule that would allow for E15, a fuel blend with 15 percent ethanol, to be sold year-round:
“During my time in Congress, I’ve urged presidents of both parties to fight for our biofuels industry and have consistently pushed for year-round E15,” Congresswoman Bustos said. “President Trump promised this rule more than two years ago and the uncertainty from its delay has hurt producers in an already struggling farm economy, which has been further damaged by the president’s reckless trade war. While I wish this announcement had come sooner, I applaud the White House for finally taking this commonsense step that will help farmers and consumers across the Heartland. As this process continues, I will remain vigilant for any additional actions the administration may pursue that would undermine this important rulemaking by further providing secret waivers or other handouts to big oil.”
Congresswoman Bustos has long been a champion of biofuels, the Renewable Fuel Standard and year-round E15 to grow our agricultural economy. Previously, she spoke out against the EPA’s secret use of waivers to big oil companies to undermine the biofuel industry and will continue to advocate for more transparency and accountability from the agency. Just last year, Congresswoman Bustos wrote to President Trump urging him to honor his pledge to deliver on year-round E15 and stressed its importance to Illinois producers.
