WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (D-IL) released the following statement in response to President Trumps Executive Order on policing:
“While President Trump’s announcement today is a small step in the right direction, it falls short of charting a meaningful path forward. Accountability cannot be accomplished without consequential action. Trust cannot be built without first hearing the words of those most in pain.
“Over the past few weeks, our nation has more fully realized the extent to which police brutality has harmed Black communities, and it must be every person’s responsibility to work toward reform. Congress must take a comprehensive approach to shifting law enforcement practices to better protect all Americans. Lives depend on it.
“I hope President Trump will join me in supporting the House’s Justice in Policing Act and in urging Congressional Republicans to support real change. While not our first or final step, the Justice in Policing Act sets a more comprehensive course toward a future where all of our communities can feel safer.”
