“Many women speak of making sure others have a seat at the table, but Justice Ginsburg built the chairs in which we rest.”
WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17) released the following statement this evening in response to the passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg:
“Tonight, we mourn the loss of one of the most respected and revered legal minds in American history. The second woman to ever serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg refused to be told that gender should, or could, ever hold back her ambition. In forging her own path, she built a road for those who followed.
“At the heart of Justice Ginsburg’s life’s work was creating opportunity within a legal system that failed to recognize equality for many. Not just a leader in the fight for gender equality, she embodied passion and determination in her quest for justice for all.
“Famously, when asked when there would be enough women serving on the Supreme Court, Justice Ginsburg responded, “when there are nine.” Many women speak of making sure others have a seat at the table, but Justice Ginsburg built the chairs in which we rest.
“Our nation owes Justice Ginsburg our deepest gratitude. My thoughts this evening lie with her family as they honor her life. May we continue in her memory and build a future that honors the history she shaped.”
