Bustos Statement on Supreme Court Ruling Against Hardworking Families

The Supreme Court’s ruling in favor of powerful special interests in Janus v. AFSCME undermines public sector unions

Washington, D.C. – Today, the Supreme Court issued a 5-4 ruling in the case of Janus v. AFSCME that undermines protections for 17.3 million public employees throughout the United States. Congresswoman Cheri Bustos, who represents Illinois where this case originated from, issued the following statement:

“Today the Supreme Court issued a ruling that puts billionaires and corporate special interests above hardworking Americans,” said Congresswoman Cheri Bustos.“Unions have always been at the tip of the spear in the fight for better wages, affordable healthcare and safe working conditions. We simply wouldn’t have a middle-class without the work of unions over generations. I know that we must strengthen, not weaken, the rights of working men and women to speak up together so that everyone has the opportunity to earn an honest day’s wage for an honest day’s work. Governor Rauner may have won this round against hardworking families across Illinois, but this fight is far from over.”
