Bustos Statement on Devastating Economic Impact of Government Shutdown

WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17) issued the following statement after a new report from the Congressional Budget Office showed that the government shutdown cost the economy $11 billion from the fourth quarter of 2018 to the first quarter of 2019, with $3 billion permanently lost:

“Shutting down the government is a failed policy that not only hurts workers but, as this report shows, also costs our nation billions in economic growth and activity. We cannot face a government shutdown anytime there is a disagreement between Congress and the executive branch – that’s no way to govern. While it’s unfortunate that the president has once again threatened to shut down the government, I hope the warning in this report will ensure leaders on both sides of the aisle avoid this type of crisis again in the future.”
