WASHINGTON – Today on Meet the Press Daily with Chuck Todd, Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17) discussed the bipartisan government funding compromise to keep the government open and our communities safe. In response to the president’s expected national emergency declaration to build an expensive and ineffective border wall, Congresswoman Bustos said that the real national emergency was the impact of President Trump’s trade war – which has caused farmer bankruptcies to soar to the highest levels in at least a decade.
Excerpts and video below:
“Why is the president doing this? We came together – Democrats and Republicans, House members and Senators – and came up with a real, negotiated idea here.”
“Let’s look at what the real national emergency is. It’s what Donald Trump is doing to our family farmers. It’s this unnecessary trade war where we’ve got corn and soybeans that are having to sit there because we don’t have the markets with Canada, and Mexico and China because of this self-inflicted trade war. That’s the real national emergency if you ask me, coming from ag country.”
