MOLINE, IL –U.S. Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17) and U.S. Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) announced $3,165,000 in grant funding for the Rock Island Co. Metropolitan Mass Transit District (MetroLINK). The funding, awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Bus and Bus Infrastructure Program, will be used to purchase electric buses, charging stations, and passenger shelters.

“Public transportation is vital to connecting people to jobs, education, and recreational activities,” Durbin said “The funding announced today will not only create a better experience for the thousands of people who rely on MetroLINK, it is also a strategic investment in environmentally-friendly infrastructure.”

“Investing in our state’s public transportation is one of the most important things we can do to move Illinois forward and grow our economy, and this funding will help improve daily commutes for countless people in and around Rock Island while saving them time in the process,” said Duckworth. “I am proud to be part of today’s announcement and I’ll keep working with Senator Durbin and Representative Bustos to bring more efficient transportation systems to every corner of our state.”

“As a member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, I know how essential investing in our transit systems is in creating good-paying jobs and growing our local economy,” said Bustos. “MetroLINK has worked hard to bring cleaner and more efficient transit to the Quad-Cities, and this funding will help them take another step forward. I will continue to work alongside Senator Durbin and Senator Duckworth to bring federal investments to our northwest and central Illinois.

With this funding MetroLINK plans to purchase five all-electric buses, charging infrastructure and six passenger shelters with real-time signage. The buses planned for purchase will enhance zero emissions operations, and charging activities will be powered by over one thousands rooftop solar panels.

MetroLINK serves the Illinois Quad Cities and its neighboring areas: Rock Island, Moline, East Moline, Milan, Silvis, Carbon Cliff, Hampton and Colona.
