WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17) announced the establishment of the Air Cargo Caucus, which she will co-chair with Congressman Paul Mitchell (MI-10). The Air Cargo Caucus will serve as a place for Members of Congress and air cargo community leaders alike to come together and discuss issues related to the industry. The goal of the caucus is to spur collaboration in Congress on cargo related issues and facilitate discussion by holding meetings, site visits and issue briefings. The caucus is launching with 35 Members of Congress from both parties and 19 states or territories.
“I’m pleased to make this announcement today because of the vital role our airports play in growing our local economy,” Congresswoman Bustos said. “With cargo from around the country and world making stops right here in our region at the Chicago Rockford International Airport, this caucus will create a platform for our region’s leaders to share best practices and connect with folks from across America. It is my hope that the Air Cargo Caucus will foster relationships that lead to partnerships — creating more jobs and economic opportunity in our region. I thank Congressman Mitchell for joining me in this bipartisan effort and look forward to the future achievements of this caucus.”
“Air cargo and air transport has played an important role in our global economy since the dawn of aviation, and I am excited to form the bipartisan Air Cargo Caucus with co-chair Rep. Bustos and 34 of my House colleagues,” said Congressman Mitchell. “This caucus will allow members of Congress to recognize and gain a better understanding of the role the air cargo industry plays in our nation, and enhance relations with those in the air cargo community to discuss issues related to the industry.”
“The Chicago Rockford International Airport is thrilled to learn of the Air Cargo Caucus,” said Mike Dunn, Director of Chicago Rockford International Airport. “The Rockford Airport’s air cargo volume has only continued to increase over the course of the last few years — making us eager to get to work and participate in events the caucus holds as we look to grow and expand our operation. Congresswoman Bustos has been a tireless leader on this issue and I thank her for her continued support of the Rockford community.”
“Air cargo spans the reach of every Congressional District and the Air Cargo Caucus co-chaired by Congresswoman Bustos will be an excellent way to bring stakeholders together,” said Cargo Airline Association President Steve Alterman. “Air cargo, jobs, and economic vitality are all closely connected and that’s what makes today’s announcement so important.”
“ATSG is very proud to be a part of the Congressional Air Cargo Caucus. Air cargo touches all of our lives and is essential to our nation’s commerce and movement of troops and supplies for the Department of Defense,” said Joe Hete, CEO of Air Transport Services Group. “Having this Caucus will be a tremendous tool for educating Members of air cargo issues.”
