Bustos Advocates for Sustainable Aviation Fuels in Hearing with Energy Secretary Granholm

WASHINGTON — This week, Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (IL-17) advocated for investment in sustainable aviation fuels during a House Appropriations Committee hearing with U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm. The use of biofuels in aviation would expand markets for family farmers and reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil.

“While electric vehicle technologies for cars and trucks are quickly coming to market, heavy-duty transportation like aviation will continue relying on liquid fuels for years to come,” said Congresswoman Bustos. “Cleaner fuels, such as sustainable aviation fuels, represent a new market opportunity for family farmers in the district I serve. American farmers are growing the crops used to make alternative fuels, and they can help reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Harnessing the power of biofuels for aviation would be a win-win-win for our climate, energy security and rural communities.”

President Biden’s Fiscal Year 2023 budget request includes increased funding for the Bioenergy Technologies Office which could scale up new technologies that can help decarbonize all modes of transportation.
