Bustos Statement on President Obama’s Nomination of Judge Merrick Garland for Supreme Court
WASHINGTON - Today, Congresswoman Cheri Bustos issued the following statement in response to President Obama’s announcement that he has nominated Judge Merrick Garland to be the next Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.
“Chief Judge Garland is a bipartisan choice to fill the Supreme Court vacancy and he has more federal judicial experience than any nominee in American history,” Congresswoman Bustos said. “Judge Garland has an impeccable record of service to our nation and, in the wake of the Oklahoma City bombing, he led the investigation and prosecution that ultimately brought Timothy McVeigh to justice. There is no excuse for obstructionism so I strongly urge all members of the Senate to move ahead with fair and bipartisan confirmation hearings without delay.”
Today, the President fulfilled his constitutional responsibility by nominating Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court. Chief Judge Garland has more federal judicial experience than any other Supreme Court nominee in history. In 1997, he was confirmed to the D.C. Circuit with broad bipartisan support, where he has served as Chief Judge for over three years.
Previously, Senator Orrin Hatch, the longest serving Republican in the Senate, described him as “a consensus nominee,” and Chief Justice Roberts explained “anytime Judge Garland disagrees, you know you’re in a difficult area.”
